The Tamale Fiasco That Had Us Laughing Through the Masa Mess

Because sometimes the best memories come from the biggest kitchen disasters

There are cooking days…

and then there are tamale days.

The kind where you tell yourself, “It’ll be fun, we’ll all help…”

and about two hours in you’re questioning every life decision that brought you there.

But somehow… those are the days that turn into the best stories.

The Story

It started with good intentions.

We had the masa.

We had the fillings.

We had the plan.

What we didn’t have… was coordination.

Someone was spreading masa too thick.

Someone else too thin.

Half the husks were tearing, and nobody could agree on how much filling was “too much.”

At one point, I’m pretty sure someone just folded one closed and said,

“Good enough, God will understand.” 😅

There was masa everywhere.

On the counter.

On the floor.

On people who definitely didn’t volunteer to be part of the process.

And the more it went sideways… the funnier it got.

The Moment It Changed

You know that moment when frustration almost takes over?

Yeah… we hit that.

But instead of snapping at each other, someone laughed.

Then someone else joined in.

And just like that — the whole kitchen shifted.

We weren’t trying to be perfect anymore.

We were just trying to enjoy it.

Music came on.

Stories started flowing.

And suddenly the mess didn’t matter.

The Truth About It All

Were those tamales perfect?

Not even close.

Some were overfilled.

Some barely had anything inside.

A few… we don’t talk about 😂

But they were ours.

Made with laughter, a little chaos, and a whole lot of love.

A Little Kitchen Reflection

Not every recipe is about getting it right.

Some are about:

  • being together

  • learning as you go

  • laughing when things fall apart

Because at the end of the day…

Nobody remembers the perfect tamale.

They remember the mess.

The laughter.

And the feeling of being in that kitchen, together.
