
My Oven’s Mood Swings and the Prayers I Whisper Mid-Bake

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m convinced every oven has a personality. And mine? Oh, she’s dramatic.
Some days my oven works perfectly, baking everything golden and beautiful like I belong on a cooking show. Other days? It acts like it woke up in a mood and chose chaos. One side burns, the middle stays undercooked, and suddenly I’m rotating pans like I’m competing in some kind of baking Olympics here in my Tucson kitchen.
After years of cooking, you’d think I would’ve replaced it by now. But honestly, that old oven and I have been through a lot together. Birthday cakes, Thanksgiving turkeys, late-night casseroles, trays of Christmas cookies, and those random “let’s bake something sweet because life feels hard today” moments.
So now, instead of fighting it… I work with it.
And somewhere along the way, those little oven struggles became moments of prayer too.
There’s something humbling about baking because no matter how experienced you are, sometimes things still don’t go according to plan. You can follow the recipe perfectly and still end up nervously peeking through the oven door wondering why your casserole is bubbling like a volcano or why the cookies look done on one side and pale on the other.
That’s usually the moment I start whispering tiny prayers.
“Lord, please don’t let this burn.”
“Please let the center cook through.”
“Please let this rise.”
And honestly? Sometimes the prayer is less about the food and more about everything else weighing on my heart.
There’s something peaceful about standing in a warm kitchen while something bakes. Especially at night, when the house is quiet and the oven light glows softly. It gives me a chance to slow down for a minute and breathe.
And maybe that’s why I’ve grown oddly thankful for my oven’s little mood swings.
Because perfection has never really been the point anyway.
Some of the best memories in my kitchen came from imperfect moments—slightly overbaked brownies, lopsided cakes, pies with cracked crusts, and meals that didn’t look Pinterest-perfect but still brought everyone to the table smiling.
It reminds me of Philippians 4:6 — “Do not be anxious about anything…” Even something as simple as baking can become a reminder to let go a little. To stop trying to control every outcome and trust that things usually turn out okay in the end.
And most of the time? They do.
Maybe not flawlessly. Maybe not exactly how I pictured them. But still good. Still comforting. Still made with love.
Just like life.
So these days, when my oven starts acting unpredictable again, I just laugh, adjust the temperature for the third time, whisper another little prayer, and keep going.
Because around here, we don’t need perfection to make something beautiful.
