And Made Us Cry Laughing
Let me tell you… not every meal that comes out of my kitchen is a winner. After 30+ years of cooking, you’d think I’d have it all down—but every now and then, something goes sideways in a way you just can’t make up.
This one happened on a regular weeknight here in Tucson. It was just me and my daughter, nothing fancy—just a simple dinner, something comforting. I had everything going, the kitchen smelled good, and I was feeling pretty proud of myself for pulling dinner together without much fuss.
And then… one tiny little mix-up turned the whole thing upside down.
I grabbed what I thought was cumin—because let’s be honest, cumin is a staple in my kitchen. But what I didn’t realize until it was too late… was that I had grabbed the wrong spice.
Now, if you cook a lot, you already know where this is going.
There I was, sprinkling it in like I always do—no measuring, just going by feel. Stirring, tasting, adjusting… thinking everything was right on track. But something felt a little off. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, so I added just a little more, thinking it would balance out.
Big mistake.
We sat down to eat, said a quick prayer, and took our first bites… and I immediately knew. That was NOT cumin.
Turns out, I had used cinnamon.
Cinnamon.
In a savory dish.
Now listen, I know there are recipes out there that make that work—but this was not one of them. This was a full-on, no-turning-back situation. The kind where your taste buds are confused, your brain is trying to catch up, and you just sit there staring at your plate wondering what just happened.
I looked at my daughter, and she looked at me… and for a second, we both tried to hold it together.
And then we lost it.
We laughed so hard we were crying. I mean, real belly laughs. The kind that makes your stomach hurt and your eyes water. Dinner was completely ruined—but somehow, the moment was perfect.
It reminded me of Proverbs 17:22 — “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” And let me tell you, we got a full dose of it that night.
Because the truth is, life doesn’t always go as planned. Dinner gets burned. Recipes flop. You mix up cumin and cinnamon. But if you can laugh through it… you’re doing just fine.
That night, we didn’t eat much of that meal—but we walked away full anyway.
Full of laughter. Full of joy. Full of a memory I’ll never forget.
And honestly? I wouldn’t trade that for a perfect dinner any day.
• Label your spices clearly—especially the ones that look similar (learn from me on this one!)
• Taste early, not just at the end—it might save your whole dish
• Don’t be afraid to laugh when things go wrong in the kitchen
• Keep a backup meal idea in mind for “just in case” nights
• Remember: the best memories aren’t always made from perfect meals
