Some nights around here just call for an easy dinner that feels comforting without making a huge mess in the kitchen. This Oven Baked BBQ Chicken has become one of my favorite “everyday life” meals because it’s simple, flavorful, and dependable — especially on those busy Tucson evenings when the day got away from me and everybody’s hungry right now.

I started making this recipe years ago when I needed something fast but still homemade. Over time, it became one of those back-pocket meals I could count on when life felt chaotic. You toss the chicken in seasoning, bake it, brush on barbecue sauce, and suddenly the whole house smells smoky, sweet, and cozy.

What I love most is that this recipe feels casual enough for a Tuesday night but still special enough to serve when family stops by unexpectedly. Add mashed potatoes, corn, mac and cheese, or a simple salad, and dinner is done.

It reminds me a little of Matthew 6:11: “Give us today our daily bread.” Sometimes God’s goodness shows up in the ordinary things — a warm meal, laughter around the table, and a little peace at the end of a long day.

This Oven Baked BBQ Chicken comes out juicy inside with sticky, caramelized barbecue sauce on the outside. It’s easy enough for beginners and perfect for busy families who still want a homemade meal.

Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts – 2 lbs of boneless chicken thighs can be substituted

  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

  • 1 1/2 tsp house seasoning

  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce – homemade or store bought

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F. Drizzle chicken with olive oil and coat with seasoning.

  2. Place on foil-lined pan and bake 15 minutes.

  3. Remove and brush with BBQ sauce.

  4. Return to oven and bake 6–8 minutes until caramelized.

  5. Remove at 160°F. Tent with foil and rest 10 minutes until 165°F. Slice and serve.

The high heat helps lock in the juices while giving the barbecue sauce that rich sticky finish everybody loves. The resting step is important too — it keeps the chicken tender instead of drying out when sliced.

This recipe works beautifully with homemade house seasoning because it adds smoky, savory flavor underneath the sweetness of the BBQ sauce.

Serve it with baked beans, roasted vegetables, potato salad, mac and cheese, or buttery corn on the cob for a full comfort-food dinner.

  • Chicken thighs stay extra juicy if you prefer dark meat.

  • Foil lining makes cleanup so much easier on busy nights.

  • Don’t skip resting the chicken before slicing.

  • Use your favorite BBQ sauce to customize the flavor.

  • This chicken is amazing sliced for sandwiches or wraps the next day.
