A Sweet Hug from the Kitchen

There’s something about Tres Leches Cake that just feels like home. It’s one of those desserts that shows up at birthdays, holidays, and those “just because we’re together” kind of days. Growing up around Mexican-American flavors, this cake always felt a little extra special—soft, sweet, and made to share.

Now here in my Tucson kitchen, I love making it for my family, especially when I want something that feels a little celebratory without being complicated. It starts simple—with a cake mix—but turns into something so rich and comforting once those three milks soak in.

And isn’t that a little like life? Sometimes the simplest beginnings turn into something beautiful with a little time and care.

“Taste and see that the Lord is good…” — Psalm 34:8

This cake is definitely one of those “taste and see” moments.

This Tres Leches Cake is soft, moist, and perfectly sweet—soaked in a rich three-milk mixture and topped with a fluffy whipped cream that just melts in your mouth.

Cake Ingredients:

• 15.25 oz white cake mix

• 1/2 cup milk

• 1/2 cup water

• 3 large eggs

• 1/2 cup vegetable oil

• 2 tsp vanilla extract

Three Milks Mixture:

• 14 oz sweetened condensed milk

• 12 oz evaporated milk

• 1 cup heavy cream

Whipped Topping:

• 1 1/2 cups heavy cream

• 1/3 cup powdered sugar

• 2 tsp vanilla extract

How to Make the Cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13 baking dish.

  2. Mix all cake ingredients on low for 1 minute, then medium for 2 minutes until smooth.

  3. Pour batter into prepared dish.

  4. Bake 23–25 minutes, until set.

  5. Let cool for about 30 minutes.

Soak & Finish:

  1. In a bowl, mix together the three milks.

  2. Poke holes all over the cooled cake (about 2/3 deep).

  3. Slowly pour the milk mixture evenly over the cake.

  4. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to soak everything in.

  5. Whip heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until fluffy, then spread over the top.

Each bite is soft, creamy, and full of that sweet milk flavor that makes Tres Leches so loved.

• Don’t rush the soak—this is where all the magic happens.

• Pour the milk mixture slowly so it absorbs evenly.

• Chill before serving for the best texture and flavor.

• Add fresh strawberries or cinnamon on top for a little extra touch.

• This cake actually gets better the next day—perfect for making ahead!
