Soft, buttery cookies with a festive sparkle that feel like the holidays in every bite

There’s something about sugar cookies at Christmas that just feels right.

Maybe it’s the bright red and green sugar…

Maybe it’s the smell of butter and vanilla filling the house…

Or maybe it’s the memories that come with them — little hands helping, sneaking dough, and laughing around the kitchen.

These are the cookies that don’t need to be fancy to be special.

They’re simple, soft, and just the right amount of sweet — the kind you make every year without even thinking about it.

And somehow… they taste even better because of that.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1½ cups sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2⅓ cups flour

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • ½ tsp baking powder

For Topping:

  • Red sanding sugar

  • Green sanding sugar

  • White sanding sugar

Instructions

  1. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  2. Mix in egg and vanilla extract.

  3. Add dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.

  4. Scoop dough and roll in sanding sugar.

  5. Place on baking sheet and gently press with the bottom of a sugared glass.

  6. Bake at 375°F for 8–10 minutes, until edges are set but centers stay soft.

Tips & Serving Ideas

Don’t overbake.

You want soft centers — they’ll firm up just enough as they cool.

Press evenly.

That little glass trick gives you that classic sugar cookie look without any fuss.

Make it a memory:

Let kids (or grandkids 😉) roll the dough in sugar — it’s messy, but that’s the whole point.

Switch it up:

  • Add almond extract for a bakery-style flavor

  • Use colored sugars for different holidays

  • Or keep them simple and classic

A Little Kitchen Moment

These are the cookies that turn an ordinary afternoon into something special.

Not because they’re complicated…

But because they bring people into the kitchen together.

And years from now, nobody’s going to remember how perfect they looked —

they’ll remember how it felt making them.

Flour on the counter. Sugar on your hands.

And a house that smells like Christmas. 🤍🎄
