There are some desserts that just feel happy, and these Lemon Brownies are definitely one of them. The bright lemon flavor, soft buttery texture, and sweet citrus glaze make these little bars taste like sunshine on a plate. Around here in Tucson, especially during those hot Arizona afternoons, lemon desserts always seem to hit the spot.

I first started making lemon brownies after one too many chocolate desserts during the holidays. Don’t get me wrong — I love chocolate as much as anybody — but sometimes you just crave something light, fresh, and cheerful. One bite of these and my daughter immediately asked me to “please keep this recipe forever.” That’s usually how I know a recipe is staying in the family collection.

And honestly, I think there’s something special about simple homemade treats. They don’t have to be fancy to bring joy. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine,” and sometimes a bright little lemon dessert shared with people you love can turn an ordinary day into a sweet memory.

These Lemon Brownies are soft, buttery, rich, and bursting with fresh lemon flavor in every bite. Even though they’re called brownies, there’s no chocolate involved here — just dense, chewy lemon goodness topped with a sweet citrus glaze that soaks perfectly into the top.

They’re easy to make, perfect for spring and summer gatherings, baby showers, brunches, church potlucks, or honestly just because your family deserves a little something sweet after dinner.

For the Brownies:

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 tbsp lemon zest

  • 12 tbsp butter

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 1/4 cups flour

For the Glaze:

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1 tbsp milk

  • 2 tsp lemon zest

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Prep pan.

  2. Mix sugar, zest, butter, eggs, lemon juice, and salt.

  3. Stir in flour until just combined.

  4. Spread into pan.

  5. Bake 25–30 minutes, cool completely.

  6. Whisk glaze, pour over, set 15 minutes.

The glaze is really what takes these over the top. It adds that sweet-tart lemon finish that makes people come back for “just one more little square” about three or four times.

These are especially good chilled in the refrigerator for a couple hours before serving. The lemon flavor becomes even brighter and the texture turns wonderfully soft and fudgy.

  • Fresh lemon juice and zest make a huge difference in flavor.

  • Don’t overmix the batter or the brownies can become tough.

  • Let the brownies cool completely before glazing for the prettiest finish.

  • These store beautifully in the fridge for several days.

  • A little powdered sugar on top makes them extra pretty for gatherings or brunch tables.
